Welcome to our weekly post where we tell you “What Comics to Watch For On Wednesday.” We are doing our best to recommend a few titles worth your time this week. It is good to note that we rarely suggest mid-run titles, because we try to provide good jumping on points or oddities that must be seen to believe.
This week’s offerings:
Warlords Of Appalachia #1
This looks very cool and hopefully not our future.
Southern Bastards meets Dune in mid-21st century America. After the New Confederacy is crushed in a second Civil War, only Kentucky holds out, not recognizing U.S. sovereignty. This leads to a particularly brutal crackdown in a small mountain town called Red Rock, where a mechanic and reluctant folk hero named Kade Mercer rises up to become the first feudal warlord of Appalachia. Features 28 pages of story content.
Chimichanga: Sorrow Of The World’s Worst Face #1
We love Eric Powell and love that we are getting different kinds of Eric Powell stories now. BIG FAN.
Wrinkle’s Traveling Circus’s most adorable bearded girl and her savory-named beast are back, and there is a new act in store! Come one, come all to the Sorrow of the World’s Worst Face! But beware: those who look behind the curtain are in for an awful treat, and it’s not just his face we’re talkin’ about!
All Star Batman #3
If you have seen me recommend this before, it’s because the creative team is great. Well, it is still Scott Snyder and John Romita Jr.…so I will still recommend it. The villain on the cover is my favorite kind of JRJ.
‘MY OWN WORST ENEMY’ part three! Now on the run from both bounty hunters and cops, Batman and Duke must find a safe place to hide out with Two-Face before they can continue their journey to the cure. Batman might soon realize his worst nightmare: that Two-Face is right?and nowhere is safe.
Doom Patrol #2
Doom Patrol #1 was absolutely crazy…like bonkers…like even me and Hal can barely figure out the bizarreness. Check out what everyone is talking about. Watch Gerard Way make something weird even weirder.
What happened to Larry Trainor? The hero known as Negative Man is still out there, but he’s not exactly the same guy he was back when Doom Patrol was still together. Like a Russian doll, there is man inside the man, and who knows how many other men inside of them, with the guy on top possessing a mind for mischief that incites violence. Meanwhile, Casey has started rebuilding Robotman, even though she still doesn’t know exactly how Cliff Steele ended up crossing her path in the first place.
Lost Boys #1
Creepy, 1980s vampires are still doing things. At first glance, this looks like a BOOM! Studios or IDW book. What makes it odd is that it is a straight up DC proper book. Boom or bust pick of the week.
The stakes are raised in this nostalgic and unstoppable sequel to the ’80s cult classic vampire film, The Lost Boys. Veteran horror writers Tim Seeley (GRAYSON, NIGHTWING, Hack/Slash), and Scott Godlewski (THE DARK & BLOODY, Copperhead) deliver a gruesome and stylish return to the bloody boardwalks and big hair of 1987! Santa Carla, California is on edge. The eccentric coastal town and haven for the undead was finally returning to ‘normal’ after its last supernatural scuffle left the local coven’s head vampire dead and gave newcomers Michael and Sam Emerson a housewarming both violent and bizarre. Now the brothers must once again team up with militant vampire hunters Edgar and Allan Frog when a new gang of ruthless, stunning, life-sucking nightcrawlers known as the Blood Belles emerges from the aftermath to collect Michael’s love interest and their lost sister, Star.
New Super Man #4
What is DC doing. New Super Man is a jerk face dude from China? Alright, I am listening…
‘MADE IN CHINA’ part four! It’s the Justice League of China vs. the Chinese Freedom Fighters! As the New Super-Man tests his power against the Flying Dragon General’s team, a shocking new revelation will stop our young hero dead in his tracks. And trust us, you won’t believe what Kenan Kong discovers! All this, plus the Chinese Freedom Fighters’ ultimate weapon arrives, and it’ll be the STAR of the show?
James Bond Hammerhead #1
“…in an ever-changing world, there’s one man you can rely on: Bond.”
Bond is assigned to hunt down and eliminate Kraken, a radical anti-capitalist who has targeted Britain’s newly-upgraded nuclear arsenal. But all is not as it seems. Hidden forces are plotting to rebuild the faded glory of the once-mighty British Empire, and retake by force what was consigned to history. 007 is a cog in their deadly machine – but is he an agent of change, or an agent of the status quo? Loyalties will be broken, allegiances challenged. But in an ever-changing world, there’s one man you can rely on: Bond. James Bond.
Dirk Gently: Salmon Of Doubt #1
Besides being an extremely odd title…this might be a very normal TV show.
Dirk Gently, created by Douglas Adams and shortly to be the star of his own television series from BBC America, returns to comics in The Salmon of Doubt, brought to you by executive producers of the show Arvind Ethan David and Max Landis. Plagued by nightmares about a childhood he never had, Dirk returns to Cambridge University to seek the advice of his former tutor, the time-traveling Professor Reg Chronotis. There he discovers that a holistic detective can have more than one past, and his adventures have only just begun… Featuring fan-favorite characters from the original books as well as the cast from the TV series, including Elijah Wood.
Electric Sublime #1
This looks super weird. I’ll check it out.
‘Art is anything you can get away with… destroy it all.’ Welcome to THE ELECTRIC SUBLIME-where art history, madness, and expression meet in a Pollock-splatter of thrilling crime adventure! When a mysterious change in the composition of a famous painting begins poisoning the minds of its spectators, Margot Breslin-director of the Bureau of Artistic Integrity-must pull famed ‘art detective’ Arthur Brut out of a mental institution and back into the insanity that sent him there in the first place. Featuring a treasure trove of classical works, under-the-radar art, and a seven-foot talking mannequin, this is comics, imitating art, imitating life. From the writer of Judas: The Last Days (IDW) and the artist of Great Pacific and Snowfall (Image)! The X-Files meets Alice in Wonderland, by way of The Da Vinci Code!
Black Light District 6 Issues (One Shot)
Chris Burnham has my trust and my interest. I like new things and have always been interested in the marriage of comics and music. Book looks dope.
AN ALL-NEW ONE-SHOT COMIC BOOK / MUSIC EXPERIENCE! JESSE BLAZE SNIDER‘s groundbreaking online comic book / music anthology ‘BLACK LIGHT DISTRICT: 6 ISSUES’ comes to Image Comics! Featuring six epic illustrated stories set to the music of the geek culture inspired ‘Black Light District ‘EP! ‘JESSE SNIDER’s BLACK LIGHT DISTRICT is a storytelling revelation! MARK MILLAR & GREG CAPULLO join forces to create the smash hit sci-fi / fantasy story of the year: REBORN. Where do you go when you die? Not heaven or hell; somewhere else. Somewhere you have to fight to survive. Somewhere the people from the past are waiting for you-the good and the bad.
