What Comics To Watch For On Wednesday, 7/27

Welcome to our weekly post where we tell you “What Comics to Watch For On Wednesday.”  We are doing our best to recommend a few titles worth your time this week.  It is good to note that we rarely suggest mid-run titles, because we try to provide good jumping on points or oddities that must be seen to believe.  This week has a couple of weird ones.

This week’s offerings:

Mechanism #1

This sounds like us:

In the aftermath of an alien invasion, a prototype military robot is rushed into the field before it is combat-ready. Now attached to a group of survivors, it studies them to learn what it means to be human. Will it come to understand man as a noble creature worth preserving or that the human race isn’t worth saving at all?

Build a big robot war weapon to save us from the aliens that realizes how crappy we are and kills us… that’s how I see it going… the comic… I mean…real life too, probably.

When you think about it hard, this feels very current (‘cept maybe aliens) and interesting.  What happens after we turn the ultimate weapon on?

But Like Maybe #1

I didn’t know that there was such a thing as a “smash hit” instagram account, but apparently there is and apparently it is making the jump to a printed medium.  Weird.  Thanks, Bliss On Tap Publishing.

Howard The Duck #9

Superstar comic cameo…. !!!The Lady In The Howard The Duck Movie From Before!!!  Leah Thompson!!!!

Howard is back in NEW YORK CITY! And on his strangest case yet: A missing person! His client? The missing person! WHAAA-? Join us as Howard encounters aliens, Brooklyn and network television with a SPECIAL GUEST STAR so SHOCKING that I am STILL SHOCKED that we’re ALLOWED TO DO THIS. SERIOUSLY.

To Marvel: It is not that shocking when you already announced it one month and twenty days ago.  It’s slightly less shocking when all the newspapers told the world that you killed Captain America before the comic was released.  Silly public relations…

Rom #1

Rom was first introduced in Marvel Comics in 1979 as the premier Spaceknight.  IDW is reviving the cult classics (see Micronauts) and finding success.  Rom should definitely have more Spaceknights per page than say…Howard the Duck, but probably the same amount as Venom Spaceknight, though.

Adventure Time Comics #1

This is a new creative talent anthology book from BOOM! Studios and the promise of a Terry Moore Adventure Time story is too much for me to pass up!  I mean, there are many other talented creators involved, but Terry Moore is one of the fathers of modern comics and is typically so serious, that I can’t even envision what his Adventure Time story could be.  Maybe BMO has to get an abortion….

Predator Vs. Judge Dredd Vs. Aliens #1

My 12 year old wet dream is being realized now.  Who is the law, who is prey?  Chances are (and solicit preview screens show) that it is going to be a bloody conflict.

10

Nightwing #1

Javi Fernandez‘ art is looking good and the story seems promising:

‘BETTER THAN BATMAN’ Chapter One: Batman taught Nightwing everything he knows-but what if everything he taught him is wrong? When Dick is stuck with a new mentor who challenges everything Batman taught him, Nightwing has to shatter his concept of justice in order to fight for what he knows is right. Writer Tim Seeley (GRAYSON, BATMAN & ROBIN ETERNAL) launches Nightwing onto a new quest alongside rising talent Javier Fernandez (RED HOOD/ARSENAL).

True Believers Doctor Strange Last Days Of Magic #1

Jason Aaron and Chris Bachalo are taking a little old and a little new and mixing it together to create “magic.”  Come read the re-defining take on Dr. Strange for the modern era for only $1.

2

Harley Quinn & Suicide Squad April Fool’s Special #1

Suicide Squad is obviously hyped up and Harley is a main player in it.  Art for Harley Quinn books has continually been a strong point for the DC Universe and this looks like no deviation.  I can’t think of anything Jim Lee has done that I have liked as much as this cover.
