So, as you might have heard, Marvel is relaunching again with 60 new #1 issues. The All-New, All-Different Marvel Universe is looking to launch exciting new characters in crazy new situations. Editor In Chief Axel Alonso was quoted in USA Today as saying:
“We’ve put the onus on the creators to come up with big changes in the lives of our characters, whether it’s Spider-Man or Ms. Marvel or Daredevil or the Hulk,” says Marvel editor in chief Axel Alonso. “You’re going to be looking at, in certain cases, new characters inhabiting those roles, and new characters dealing with profound changes in the relationships with others around them and where they live.
“We’ve challenged everybody to come up with the right ‘Oh (expletive)’ reveal for their character to shake it up and make it interesting.” – Axel Alonso in USA Today
So in these teaser images, we see characters that we know and characters that we don’t. We see a premium being put on getting away from stereotypical superheroes. Characters with different ethnicity and gender, gearing up to lead the charge of redefining the most successful comic book publisher around.
7 legitimate female superheroes and not an inch of cleavage between them. Not only that, but these are some female characters that are gonna’ whoop somebody’s ass, early and often. Think about the fact that we have a well-developed female character in X-23 who is presumably stepping into the role of Wolverine. Not “Girl Wolverine,” just plain and simple “Wolverine.” And she should. As a character she has earned her time in the spotlight.
We see street level and insanely powerful, put into the same ranks. There may be a few brooders among them, but overall, it looks like Marvel is gearing up to have a lot of fun…company-wide. Writers like Brian Michael Bendis, Jeff Lemire, Mark Waid, Charles Soule, Jason Aaron, G. Willow Wilson, and Dan Slott can handle the load of a relaunch and should provide great content where we will see something new spring to life from old characters. Axel promised:
“expect novelists and a next generation of talent exhibiting “diversity in terms of gender and ethnicity.” – Axel Alonso in USA Today
Yeah. All of that sounds good, plus there are rumors that something crazy is happening with the Hulk. I dunno, I like superhero comics and although this is a cash grab, most likely intended to redefine the universe to set up the cinematic arms of Marvel to not have to continue to work with EXPENSIVE stars, I don’t care. I’m excited about it. Maybe I’m a sheep, but I am ok with that.
