Sea Bear and Grizzly Shark #1

Many happy returns to our avid readers and welcome back to Comical-Musings.  I trust that you are enjoying your July and our month of “Independents.”  If you are new to the blog, we are all reviewing, discussing, and presenting opinions on independent comics this month in honor of American independence.  There are many great independent publishers out there including Top Cow, IDW, ONI, and most notably success-wise Image.  The comic book that I am bringing to your attention today is an Image comic that defies boundaries and definition.
Imagine yourself on a skiff in the middle of the ocean blue.  Immediately, a thrashing in the water robs you of your peace.  SHARK!  Stay on the boat, don’t bleed in the water.  The irony of this situation that has been presented to you is that it wasn’t a shark, it was a sea bear…and you’re already dead.  Sea Bear and Grizzly Shark #1
is a collection of two short stories about animals out of place in nature.  A bear in the sea and a shark in the trees.  It is just plain silly.  The comic book is made of over the top, shocking moments basically on every page.  Now I’m obviously not talking about the man with scissorblades for arms, or the bear people, or the father who sets his son down on a campfire to cauterize the wound of being bitten in half and then proceeds to make jokes about not having an abdomen any longer…. Anyways, this is obviously not a very “classy” book.  It is, however, very funny.  The idea that for pages and pages all we see are happy scenes, then a minor bleed brings on physical carnage and destruction by unseen grizzly sharks is simply greatness.  Ryan Ottley and Jason Howard really outdid themselves here.  This is such a departure from modern-day comic book writing, but a welcome departure.  By the time you have finished ingesting this issue, you will have learned nothing, giggled a little bit, and thought rationally about very little.  A welcome experience in the world today.
