Oh joy, “What Comics to Watch For On Wednesday” (#WC2W4OW); my favorite ongoing feature at Comical Musings™. I, Hal, especially enjoy WC2W4OW because Scott has much better taste in comics than I do, so his recommendations help me navigate away from the garbage with flashy covers to which I am usually drawn. I also like this weekly article because Scott does his best to recommend a few titles worth my time each week, whereas I would probably just slap something together. I’ve often noted that he rarely suggests mid-run titles, because he tries to provide good jumping on points or oddities that must be seen to believe.
This week’s offerings:
Also, Scott never just gets the list of what’s being released and writes about the four or five things at the top. If he did he’d have to write about…
Digital Painting Techniques Vol. 07
Are they really on volume 7 already?! Where does the time go? Anyway, look at the badass wizard on the cover; that’s how you know this comic is going to be badass. I wonder what kind of badass adventures he gets into during his quest to paint digital. They better be spectacularly badass for $49.99. I didn’t read the synopsis, but with such an awesome looking dude on the cover I feel very confident that this comic will be worth the price.
Self Storage #1
So basically, this sounds like the TLC reality show “Storage Wars” plus zombies. What could possibly go wrong? Also in the “what could possibly go wrong” category, the solicitation says: “What if you found a zombie locked up in a self storage unit? Would you keep it?” If you ever find yourself in this situation (or anything close to this situation) the answer to that question is NO. I am interested to find out why the zombie put itself in there. It’s called “Self Storage” so there must be a reason why it was storing itself.
Oooooooohhhhhh yeeeeeeeaaaaahhhhh. Henchgirl. Heh heh heh. Wait. HENCHgirl? Sorry. My bad. I read it wrong the first time. Oh well, if IO9 says it’s ‘A terribly fun read’ then there’s a good chance that it will be either fun or terrible.
Apocalypse Meow Meow This one is just a shout out to The Blackness Monster. If you catch any students reading this comic during your class, give them an A+.
Puppet Master #7
Are you kidding me? “The Puppet bodies have cut a bloody trail with only one final destination: Hell for the souls that abandoned them. A deal is placed before the souls that used to inhabit the Puppets, but will they accept? and should they? Enter Anapa, son of Sutekh. Film and comics converge in the ultimate tale of revenge!” I’m not sure what those words mean, but I’m pretty sure they mean “Why aren’t you already on the way to the comic store?”
Savage Dragon #208
I don’t know how they’re going to top Savage Dragon #207! There’s not even a solicitation for this one; probably because it’s too awesome to put into words. So, I’m just going to have to give you my best guess about the story based on the cover. Savage Dragon has taken his Radio Shack robot on a camping trip and things are not going well. The robot is already falling apart. They’ve run out of food so the Dragon has had to start eating his clothes and part of his head fin. And now they’re out of matches so the Dragon and the robot are trying to rub their arms together to start a fire. But who owns the mysterious arm on the right hand side, and why is discount Wonder Woman mad about it? You’ll have to read the issue to find out…
I’m pretty sure that’s at least 90% accurate. And finally, lets see. I can’t even find a title on this one, so I’ll just have to call it…
Neon Fish-man Attacks #1
This issue is sure to be full of attacks from the neon fish man, oh wait. This is Aquaman? Ugh. Never mind.
Yep. I sure am glad Scott writes this every week.
